The Twickel Estate

The Twickel Estate is over 650 years old and takes its name from the Van Twickelo family which in 1347 bought the farm on the same spot where now the castle is located. Until 1953, the estate was in the private possession of the Van Heekeren - Van Wassenaer family. The last baroness gave the estate in the care of Twickel Foundation. Apart from the estate of the same name in Delden, the property also involves the former estates of the family near Brecklenkamp in the Municipality of Denekamp and in the adjacent German town of Lage, in Wassenaar, Dieren, Zevenaar, Borculo and Lochem. In total the foundation manages around 6,300 hectares of land.

The main objective of the Twickel Foundation is the preservation of the estate as an area of natural beauty and a cultural monument and the preservation of its historical value. Central issues are the preservation of the beautiful landscape and the rural character with a financially sound management. To reach these goals, agriculture is essential. Most of the country estates consist of agricultural parcels that are tilled by tenants. These tenants play a crucial role in the maintenance of the landscape and form an important economic base for the estate. For more information see: www.twickel.nl.
